Rambling sonnet, why don’t you settle down?

March 24, 2024 by BHW

“Please come to Boston” in my head, lyric of longing, lives

divided, yearning to leave meets the gravitational pull of home,

delicious agony of the unrequited, the bird and fish passionate

in love, but where will they live?

The bird needs the fish to sing to, to remind it to turn its view

from the clouds, the fish needs to look up for inspiration, to know

it is seen by someone graceful. More powerful than presence

is memory exactly the way we were that one time, incomplete

moments more whole than a lifetime mated. Please, stay

where you are. I will ramble and drift for both of us, we will live

our call and response in quatrains, inhabit the satisfying form

bound by tension: return or leave, come here, come home

until we meet our volta -the final turn of our couplet,

uncoupled we are one.
